12.000 - "Solving Complex Problems" is a 9 unit core subject that only freshmen can participate in. Some students in the class may also be a part of the Terrascope freshman program, an educational component of MIT's Earth System Initiative. Although all students participating in the Terrascope program are required to enroll in 12.000, not all students enrolling in 12.000 subject must participate in the Terrascope program. This structure allows students who feel unable to commit to a two-semester program to still benefit from the project-based learning environment of Solving Complex Problems. However, we encourage as many students as possible to join Terrascope because the program permits students to delve more deeply into the issues central to the Mission through innovative subjects such as 1.016 in the Spring semester and optional field trips during the year. Question: Can you be in Concourse freshman program and still be in Mission 2010?
Answer: Yes. Students interested in exploring their options are encouraged to check out freshman learning communities such as Terrascope and Concourse. You can participate in either Terrascope or Concourse, but not both, and still take 12.000 as a subject in the Fall. Concourse students typically finish with classes by 3pm, and 12.000 is 3-4pm MWF.
