Tentacles
Another key part to the room are the monster’s tentacles. We chose to begin exploring how these could be manufactured to achieve both the aesthetic that we wanted as well as serve its use case well.
Tentacles
In terms of aesthetics, we wanted a semi-realistic looking tentacle. This means a smooth, but non-perfect surface finish. For its use case, it must be durable and be able to withstand being hit and pulled at by the ropes. We also wanted it to be flexible like a real tentacle, and not rigid. Because of these requirements, we chose to cast our tentacle in a blue foam moldusing the Flex Foam iii as our tentacle material.
We decided to make a full-scale tentacle to be able to properly test its look and feel. We created a mold out of blue foam to cast our tentacle. This process involved hollowing out two mirrored sides of the mold that would make the tentacle. Below is a video of a process that we discovered works well after trying many different methods.
