On the Preparation of Coffee

A Human-use Analysis

Options for Extracting the Gloriousness

Here are the Machines considered:

Mr Coffee

Here we'd keep the existing Mr. Coffee machine, with beans on the house. *And please note that this is a stock photo - our unit had years of accrued character (aka grime).*

The primary objection to the status quo was the frequent mismatch between when the coffee was produced and when one wanted to consume it - many were not fans of old coffee. The were also comments around the mismatch between preparation efforts and consumption efforts, with the observation that many were more keen to participate in the latter than the former.

Cost: Free (+ cost of beans)

Verdict?: Negative

Keurig

The omni-present Keurig K-Cup machine. If you've ever purchased a new set of car tires, they probably had one in the lobby of the store.

Most people were staunchly opposed to the unnecessary and wasteful plastic consumption associated with the Kurig K-Cup machine. Also, the weak coffee strength and inability to customize the brew were viewed negatively.

Cost: Starting at ~$100 (+ cost of cups)

Verdict?: Negative

"A Nice and Expensive Coffee Machine"

To quote the boss.

The image left is of a Jura Impressa C60. It makes single cups and espresso from whole beans. Haden - the lab project manager who is also one of my favorite people in the Known Universe but chose not to be interviewed for this analysis - made the purchase suggestion, I believe because a fellow named Dale knew of another lab that had the same unit. I do not believe that Dale ever said that the unit was any good.

Cost: Starting at $999 (+ cost of beans)

Verdict?: YES!

We gots one!

Let's walk through the operation.
