The Redesign

The garage door opener does two things. It makes opening the door easy and provides access control. The mechanical lifting components work well enough, but the frustration of clicking away can be alleviated.

New technology enables us to completely change the authentication system for garage door openers. Instead of using a remote, a camera with image recognition can automatically open the door as an authorized car approaches. This is similar to license plate recognition on toll roads. When entering with a new car or rental, a quick text with a code can temporarily authorize the new vehicle.

The automatic system has many benefits. The remote is the largest friction point for users. Once eliminated, we no longer click away in frustration to open the door. There is no risk of it falling apart or off of the visor while driving if it does not exist. The glove box is freed up for other uses and theft is no longer a worry. Drivers cannot forget their remote because the car is the remote.

Apartment buildings gain extra benefits from this system. Managers can accurately track garage capacity and usage. Tenants delinquent in payments can be allowed to drive out but be barred from reentry. There is also no need to stock extra receivers or to collect and maintain deposits.

An Illustration

A complete system redesign completely eliminates user input and the associated frustrations. The seamless experience garage door openers promised over a decade ago are now fully realized through automated systems.

A fully integrated solution. No need to for your self driving car to wake you up.
