The original Phil is mean and driven by success. He cares only for himself and is amused by the failures of others. He is essentially himself with added knowledge of the situation in each of the interactions in this phase. The last interaction, the canned groundhog speech on day 7, segues into the days spent trying to have the perfect date with Rita. Rita's final rejection and explanation of what is wrong with him makes him desperate.
