Music Composition for Dummies

by Shi Ling Seow and Yun Wu

Abstract

For those who have innovative ideas, but cannot read or write music, or for those who wish to compose more efficiently, this system will allow a person to play a simple tune on an instrument, and obtain a corresponding piece of sheet music on a video output. The system is made up of two main parts: a pitch detection/filter module, and a video output module. The pitch detector/filter will determine the note being played based on the frequency of the input. Then, the video component will correctly draw the note being played onto a staff on a screen. The note images outputted will be stored in a ROM. To demonstrate the proof-of-concept, we will limit our compositions to only simple notes first without rhythms.
