September 12, 2004:

Summary Clarifications
A couple quick things about the summaries:
  • Please remember to email the summaries to both TAs
  • Just copy and paste the summary into the email. This makes it much easier for us to grade.
  • The email subject line should only have the first authors last name and the word summary. For example, Gross Summary should be the title for the first summary

September 7, 2004:

  • The PRESENTATIONS
The presentations should all be done in presentation software, and for ease of use everyone is encouraged to use their own laptops for their presentation. However, if you are unable to find a laptop to use feel free to email Tim to use his.
  • The SUMMARIES - LATE PENALTY
The goal of the summary is to encourage you all to read the paper before coming to class. This really helps liven up the discussion on the paper. Due to this, no summaries will be accepted late. All summaries should be emailed to both TAs.

Course Overview

9.011 is an introductory course for first-year graduate students aimed at providing a synthetic overview of major principles and techniques associated with neuroscience. We begin by covering the fundamentals of anatomy, biophysics, and genetics. Next we explore the visual, auditory, somatosensory and motor systems, emphasizing common themes while delineating specific information processing strategies. Principles derived while surveying these systems are applied to later lectures describing the most recent findings in learning, memory, sleep, and cognition.

Format

The class runs from 2-4 PM. On days which include a student presentation, the first 1.5 hours of class will be a lecture, while the last 15-30 minutes will consist of a student-led discussion of a research article. All students will be responsible for a written summary of the research article, due before the beginning of the class.

Grading

  • 40% -- Midterm
  • 40% -- Final
  • 10% -- Participation (Including paper presentation and participation during others' presentations)
  • 10% -- Summaries
