COMPLIANCE AND ELIGIBILITY
Important Information
Regarding Health Insurance &
Varsity Sports Participation
As some teams start their seasons before the Waiver deadline (9/30/2007) for the MIT Student Extended Insurance Plan,
the Department of Athletics, Physical Education, and Recreation strongly encourages all potential varsity intercollegiate
participants to Waive, if planning to do so, on or before August 1, 2007.
This is for three important reasons:
-
By delaying this decision, student-athletes run the risk of being responsible for paying the full cost of the MIT
Student Extended Insurance Plan. This can occur because all MIT students are "active" on the Plan until the Waiver is
submitted, reviewed, and approved. (i.e. prior to September 30, 2007). If a student-athlete becomes sick or injured
during the early part of the first semester, charges for the health care received can be billed against his/her account
on the MIT Student Extended Insurance Plan. Fees are generated for example, if a student-athlete sees our Team
Physician and has an MRI done or if he/she needs care while away from campus on a team trip and subsequently taken
to the emergency room. As soon as bills are charged to an account on the MIT Students Extended Plan, the individual
loses the ability to Waive and is responsible for the full cost of the Plan. For current rates can be reviewed at:
http://web.mit.edu/medical/p-rates.html
- Early decisions on the Waiver help the Sports Health Care Team process everyone's medical/health
insurance statuses before student-athletes arrive on campus and team practices, or try-outs, begin.
Because it can take up to two weeks to certify individual medical/health insurance plans (if you waive);
if a student-athlete waits until he/she gets to campus to Waive, they run the risk if not being able to
participate by the time his/her sport's season starts.
- Student-athletes electing to Waive need time to investigate, and confirm to the Sports Health Care Team, that
his/her individual medical/health insurance includes (a) provision for sports
injury/illness related medical care (b) with a limit of at least $75,000.
- New NCAA mandate regarding Medical Examination for all new athletes (Freshmen and and any
Upperclassmen participating for the first time)
Prior to participation in any practice, competition, or out-of-season conditioning activities,
student-athletes who are beginning their initial season of eligibility (including sophomores,
juniors, seniors, and grad students) shall be required to undergo a medical examination.
The examination must be administered within six months prior to participation in any practice,
competition, or out-of-season conditioning activities. Please note that the "six month window" d
epends on the date that your chosen sport is to hold their first practice. For example,
if your team starts on 9/5/07 then your physical needs to have been administered on or after 3/5/07.
