What is the Internet?

The internet is a group of computers that connect individuals across the globe. It was created in the 1970's as a way for the military and universities to the exchange of data. With the birth of the World Wide Web (WWW) the internet now allows the exchange of documents, pictures, audio, and video material between any two parties.

The current WWW is a dynamic archive of <web pages>, each with its own address, content, and most with links to other pages.

To access all pages on the WWW you need:

  1. a computer and an Internet Service Provider (ISP) to connect you
  2. -- OR --
  3. Just an internet-ready computer terminal or e-mail device!
