My experience (based on meeting numerous
filmmakers at festivals and film markets)is that
there is a wide variety of contract possibilities
that filmmakers / producers might agree upon.
A distributor might thus have unlimited world
distribution rights (including theatrical,
non-theatrical, and TV) for one film and very
limited rights for another one (e.g.
non-theatrical rights to distribute within only
one country).
It's probably easier to first draw up a list of
films that you would like to present, and then
contact the filmmakers to find out about the
rights situation.
Alternatively, talk to agents that handle
distribution rights for filmmakers / producers,
and work with independent filmmakers in
particular. One name that comes to my mind is Jane
Balfour Films in London; she handles quite a lot
of independent cinema. Sorry, I have no address or
phone number at hand. But check with the British
Council.
