International Open Pledge

A document released by the People's Democratic Party in February of 2016 in an attempt to allay concerns that they intended to divest foreign firms of their holdings in San Corenzo, violate human rights, and monopolize the production and research of Torzone.

As a piece of strategic propaganda, the pledge was a stroke of brilliance. The People's Democratic Party had distanced itself from other separatist movements throughout history through its stated intention to remain friendly to foreign interests. Pragmatically, the Party could afford to make concessions; the resources of San Corenzo were so rich that her residents could afford to share them. Offering to do so, however, partially defused popular opinions that the Menoristas intended to abrogate their stated belief in non-violence.

Though officially ascribed to Pedro Menor, many contemporaries claimed that the pledge was in fact written by none other than Alberta Benes, Menor's wife-to-be. There is little evidence to substantiate this claim.

A partial except reads:

...but will future generations say of us that we were opportunists, simply because it had been our desire to secure the blessings of liberty and property to our children? They may, if our methods are bloody, our policies hard-handed, our economic naive, upon the day we come to possess this island as a country of our own. Therefore, it is right that we now testify that the new people's government, when it comes into being, will take no action to exclude foreigners from taking part in the great harvest of the wealth of our homeland... (paragraph 8)

... Therefore, we say: San Corenzo cannot be rightly considered a friend of the United States. For what friends take they return, whereas the United States takes from us without returning even so much as the right to use our own lands as we see fit, to spread life throughout the world. Though our destiny is to triumph, our methods must be mild, for it is also our destiny to be the givers and keepers of health and life. (paragraph 15)

Many groups mistrusted the Party's sincerity, however. At a state dinner Governor Preston was widely quoted as saying "I've heard of the devil quoting scripture to his own purpose, but I'd never though I'd see the day he'd try to write it."
