...entered the path up to (the gallery) with torches. The fires were removed from the torches yet there was light in the space. Above and below in the roof and the floor the stones glow and all can be seen. A strange light that is difficult to work by, but easy to move by.
Most of this document was destroyed. The master builders may have taken the torches in order to preserve oxygene in the tunnel. Later, Ehab actually explains why this was necessary. In the tunnel leading up to the gallery there are now girdle stones, placed vertically into each course of core stones (see plan). All past research showed that these stones prevented the core stones from slipping outwards into the tunnel. Perhaps they were just put in a placeholders when these "lights" were removed.
