The Experience

There are two main experiences when using MIT public bulletin boards:  (1) Posting the Advertisements and (2) Viewing the Advertisements.

Experience 1: Posting Advertisements

Basic Procedure (based on survey of 7 students and personal experience):
  1. Prepare supplies: (1) Stapler w/ plenty of staples, or tacks; (2) Advertisements.

  2.
  3. Plan route.

  4.
  5. Find a friend to tag along (Optional, but recommended).

  6.
  7. Locate all "public" bulletin boards that you want to post. (All students interviewed, both graduate and undergraduate, stated that they only postered in locations most relevant to their targeted audience and/or in high traffic areas.)

  8.
  9. When approaching each board, find a place to set the remaining posters. The typical location is on the ground next to the bulletin board. (Optional, but you are likely to drop hundreds of posters if you try to balance them. A carrying case (bookbag, binder, etc.) is recommended, but not typically used by any of those surveyed. All but one student surveyed have dropped a significant number of ads before.)

  10.
  11. Search for a location on the bulletin board to put your ad. If board is full, search for an expired ad, repeated ad, or for a non-MIT affiliated ad to poster over. (Rule of thumb by those interviewed: if you can't find a spot in 30 seconds, move on to next board ... or poster over the ad that you have seen most on other boards.)

  12.
  13. Attach your ad to the board. (Used at least once by all of those interviewed: if they ran out of staples or tacks, they "borrowed" tacks from other ads.)

  14.
  15. Move on to next board.

The Supplies:   Locate Board and Search for Space:   Staple (No More Staples):

Tack Up (Borrow Tack):   The Post:   The First Viewer:
