An Epidemic of ADD or a Matter of Overdiagnosis?

      Internet newsgroup: alt.support.attn-deficit

      1. Where is the information? Information is in the form of emails sent to the newsgroup by persons who read the newsgroup. To access the emails, one must have internet access and be able to access newsgroups. Access is easy for anyone with internet and newsgroup access, and nearly impossible otherwise. On hindrance to access is that there is a large amount of information and it is not at all organized. Some information is entirely meaningless, not really information at all. The biggest roadblock to obtaining information from this source, is therefore that one must wade through the irrelevance. Since this is a support newsgroup, the persons writing to it are mostly those who have been diagnosed with ADD or something similar, and those who live with persons with ADD. Drug treatments seem to be one of the most highly discussed topics. 2. Actors: Aside from persons afflicted with ADD and the people who live with them, doctors are discussed rather frequently, and most often negatively. Since many letters are testimonials about peoples experiences, it doesn't appear that doctors are collectively spoken of as an evil group.

      3. The posts to the site are very direct and honest, but also many times they are incorrect, as they are posted by misinformed and uninformed persons. Often times, multiple correction responses are posted for single postings. There are very few postings by persons who are experts on ADD, but rather by those who think being afflicted by ADD makes them an expert. The information is of course geared to those who are familiar with ADD and its symptoms, and who are looking for ways of treating it and living a more normal life. The information presented here presents both comedy and tragedy. While the persons writing to this group are relating their frustrations with the disorder, they are often joking in their manner of doing so, perhaps a result of the disorder. This is a good source for persons who are familiar with the disorder and interested in the experiences of others. Some information in the source is not to be believed. Also the source is likely to be viewed rather differently by someone with ADD.
