Theresa M. Stone, Executive Vice President & Treasurer, Massachusetts Institute of Technology

Biography

Theresa M. Stone joined the Massachusetts Institute of Technology as Executive Vice President and Treasurer in February 2007. As EVP and Treasurer, Ms. Stone is responsible for M.I.T.’s capital programs, facilities, human resources and information technology, and she serves as the Institute’s Chief Financial Officer and Treasurer.

She retired from the position of President of Lincoln Financial Media Group after the merger of Jefferson-Pilot Corporation with Lincoln Financial Group. From 2001 to 2006 Ms. Stone served as Chief Financial Officer and Executive Vice President of Jefferson-Pilot Corporation. Additionally, she was President of Jefferson-Pilot Communications Company, the company’s radio, television and sports broadcasting company from 1997 to 2006.

Ms. Stone joined Jefferson-Pilot Financial in July 1997 upon its acquisition of Chubb Life Insurance Company where she served as President and Chief Executive Officer from 1994 to 1997. She was Executive Vice President of The Chubb Corporation from 1995 to 1997. Prior to joining Chubb in 1990, Ms. Stone was a Principal with Morgan Stanley & Co., Inc. where she worked as an investment banker from 1976 to 1990 and advised clients primarily in the financial services industry on financial and strategic matters.

Ms. Stone was the Chair of the Board of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Investment Management Company which manages the Institute’s $8.5 billion endowment and $2.6 billion of pension funds. She continues to serve ex officio on the Investment Management Company Board and as a member of the M.I.T. Corporation and the M.I.T. Executive Committee. During her ten year tenure as a member of the M.I.T. Corporation, Ms Stone served on the Humanities Visiting Committee as Chair and on the Music and Theatre Arts Visiting Committee.

Ms. Stone served as Vice Chair of the Board of Directors of the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond until her relocation to Boston. She was also Chair of the Committee on Federal Reserve Information Technology which provides Information Technology services to the entire Federal Reserve System.

Ms. Stone is a Director of Progress Energy Corporation where she serves on the Audit and Finance Committees. She previously was a member of the corporate boards of Burlington Industries and the Margaretten Corporation.

Ms. Stone served recently as a member of the Chancellor Search Committee for North Carolina Agricultural and Technical University. She and her husband were Dinner Chairs for the North Carolina Council for Community and Justice 2006 Citation Award. Ms. Stone was Chair of the Board of the Eastern Music Festival, a Trustee of the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, Campaign Chair for the United Way of Greensboro, and Director of Forward Greensboro and the New Hampshire Historical Society.

Ms. Stone received a bachelor’s degree in French literature from Wellesley College and earned a M.S. in Management from M.I.T. Sloan. She grew up in Boston and attended Girls’ Latin School. Ms. Stone is married to Charles Frederic Stone, III, also a Sloan graduate. They have one 22-year-old son, Charles McLaughlin Stone.
