HKN Underground Guide to VI-A

Motorola

Location: Phoenix, AZ
Number of Respondents: 1

The student lived in a suburban location, where housing was easy to find. The company provided assistance in finding housing (all interns were housed together in an apartments), and Motorola also provided a subsidy to cover utility costs and part of the rent. The student spent 20 minutes each day travelling to and from work via a carpool. A car is necessary, and Motorola provides cars for its interns. There is an excellent variety of after-work activities in the area, but beware of the Arizona heat!

The student worked in small group of 7 people. The project, involving basic research, was assigned upon arrival via conversation with the Motorola HR Dept. The project was of average interested to the student, and was of average importance to the work of the group. The student felt the project had the right level of challenge.

The work environment at Motorola is quite laid-back, and dress is fairly casual. The student was provided with his/her own cubicle. The co-workers are extremely competent and treated the student with a great deal of respect. The available equipment is state-of-the-art. There was average contact with other students. Since Motorola housed its interns together, the interaction between students was mostly in the form of parties and dinners.

No health or dental benefits, or 5th year, 1st term tuition costs are paid by Motorola, but moving costs are covered. Salary was below average.

The student reported that Motorola is an average company and that he/she worked in a good group. The student would choose to work at Motorola again and would consider working there after graduation, although he/she found that the relations between the VI-A Program and Motorola's HR Dept. are rather disorganized.
