Save on the cost of comparable commercial loudspeakers by making your own. For beginners, design and construction from crossovers to enclosures are covered. Class includes 3 one hour lectures covering design, theory and building crossovers on Jan.12,14,16 from 2-3PM and 3 two hour classes on how to build enclosures Jan. 6,13,20 from 9-11AM. Ben Barrowes will demonstrate programming and running the Harrison Alpha CNC lathe in the MIT Hobby Shop. Starting with a dxf file the Alpha Plus software will create a tool path that runs the lathe automatically. Use of the lathe is open to members of the MIT community when they join the Hobby Shop. Register in the Hobby Shop after Dec. 1.

Charles Darwin described the Venus Flytrap as "one of the most wonderful [plants] in the world" in his book Insectivorous Plants, but that's just one of the many species of plants that turn the tables on animals. Come learn about the different adaptations plants have made to catch a bite in poor soils around the world, and a local growers society that's been described as "a lot more fun than those rose people". Come learn how to bind a book, and take your work home at the end! I will be teaching a variation on the Coptic style of bookbinding, which allows a book to be laid open on a table without straining the spine. Great for journals and sketchbooks. All you need to bring is an X-acto knife - all other materials provided. I'll have some snacks, but you may also want to bring a lunch.

Creative Bookbinding: Flag Book

The flag book is an exciting structure that offers budding book artists myriad possibilities of content and design. It consists of a simple accordion-folded spine with pages called flags which may be decorated and arranged in unique ways to create a kinetic experience for the viewer. During the workshop, participants will create their own flag book model while exploring the basics of bookmaking. This will also be a special opportunity to work in the E. Martin and Ethel Wunsch Conservation Laboratory, and learn about the Libraries' efforts to preserve MIT's unique and varied collections. We will provide all materials, including a selection of decorative papers. Bring your ideas and enthusiasm!

Have you ever been camping and thought to yourself, "What would I do if I lost my sleeping bag and matches?" Come learn how to survive in the wilderness the way many Native Americans did - through respect and understanding of your natural environment. Based on the teachings of Tom Brown Jr (as taught at his reknowned wilderness survival school, The Tracker School), the basic survival skills of shelter, water, fire, and food will be taught in this hands-on, 4-hour intensive workshop. Students will have the opportunity to make crafts such as fire-kits and coal-burned spoons/bowls. A sturdy pocket-knife or hobby-knife is required for carving wood (some may be available for loan or sale, please inquire in advance).
