John Kingston is Professor of Linguistics at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. His research interests include phonetics, phonology, speech perception, and African and Native American languages. He received his Ph.D. from Berkeley in 1985. Recent publications include (with R. L. Diehl) “Phonetic Knowledge,” in Language; “Learning Foreign Vowels,” in Language and Speech; “The Phonetics of Athabaskan Tonogenesis,” in Athabaskan Prosody (John Benjamins); and “From Ears to Categories: New Arguments for Autonomy,” in Proceedings of the First Phonetics and Phonology in Iberia Conference (Mouton de Gruyter).
