LSA.308 | Introduction to Phonetics

John Kingston and Aditi Lahiri
TR 2:55-4:35
location: 2-139

The first three weeks of this course will cover the fundamentals of speech production, acoustics, and perception. Its purpose is to lay the empirical and theoretical groundwork for the focus on specific phenomena in the second three weeks of the course. Nonetheless, considerable attention will be paid along the way to the relationships between phonetics and phonology. (Extensive use will be made of Boersma and Weenink's PRAAT software in class demonstrations, exercises, and projects. Students should download the most recent version before the course begins.) The second half of the course will focus on theories of speech production and perception including psycholinguistic models. Experimental techniques will also be discussed. Students will be required to read and discuss original research papers.
