Alain Peyraube is currently Directeur de Recherche at the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS, Paris, France) and Professor of Chinese Linguistics at the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales (EHESS). He received his Ph.D. from Paris 8 University in 1976 and his Doctorat d'Etat from Paris 7 University in 1984. He has been Director of the Institute of East Asian Linguistics (CNRS and EHESS) from 1984 to 1998 and Founding Editor of the Cahiers de Linguistique d'Asie Orientale. He is corresponding member of the Academia Sinica of Taiwan and has taught at two previous LSA institutes (1997, 2001). A specialist in Chinese historical syntax, A. Peyraube has authored two books and some sixty articles on Chinese linguistics. His latest publications include “Historical Change in Chinese Grammar,” in Cahiers de Linguistique Asie Orientale; “L'evolution des structures grammaticales,” in Langages; “On the History of Place Words and Localizers in Chinese—A Cognitive Approach,” in Functional Structure, Form and Interpretation (Routledge-Curzon); and “Ancient Chinese,” in Encyclopedia of the World's Ancient Languages (Cambridge University Press).
