Our Purpose
Our research objective is to examine blast induced concussions focusing on the physical event as a driver of the injury, the biological cascade of responses of the brain tissues and cells to such insult; and the cognitive outcomes resulting as a consequence of your exposure to the explosion.
What does the study involve
There will be 1 to 4 sessions. Each session will last 2-3 hours.
- Session 1: You will be asked a series of questions and to perform cognitive tasks. This session will determine if you fall under the study inclusion criteria.
- Session 2: You will be asked additional questions and to perform more cognitive tasks.
- Session 3: You will be imaged in a standard MRI.
- Session 4: You will be imaged in a state of the art high resolution MRI.
What We Hope to Achieve
Using the data collected we aim to:
-
Better understand the brain’s response to an explosion induced concussion by examining the brain’s function and neuroconnections.
- Create computer models of how a blast wave impacts the brain to be used in developing protective equipment.
Benefits of Participation
- Help us develop new concussion diagnostic methods and blast protective equipment.
- Receive FREE state of the art imaging on advanced MRI systems. You can share the data with your doctor which may help you understand and treat your symptoms.
- Earn $30/hour (sessions 1 & 2) and $50/hour (sessions 3 & 4) for participation.
How Can I Participate
You are invited to join the study if you:- Had a concussion caused by an explosion
- 18-70 years old
- No metallic materials in your body (implants are okay)
- No psychotic disorders (e.g. bipolar, schizophrenia)
