Inspiration

The Corbetts drew inspiration from Ebenezer Howard’s Garden City concept and subsequent greenbelt communities:

“We think that Howard was on the right track: after we have taken advantage of the potential for infill development, much of our population growth should be accommodated in largely self-sufficient communities, limited in size and population density but big enough to sustain a variety of industries and to satisfy the everyday wants of the population.  Like Howard, we suggest that these towns be surrounded by borders of agricultural land or greenbelts and be connected to one another through a transit system, creating garden cities rather than urban sprawl.”

“We propose that from an ecological standpoint, much new development should take the form of garden city units, made up of garden village neighborhoods like Village homes.” (Corbett and Corbett 2000, 117)
