This website is an exploration of two post-industrial urban sites - their transformation and their reintroduction to nature. I explore two case studies: Landscape Park Duisburg-Nord in Germany's Ruhr Valley, and Nine Mile Run in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. One is the site of new residential development and associated open space, used primarily by local residents; the other is an internationally recognized regional park. Both are examples of reclaiming industrial sites for new uses and new users, and in each case, remnants of the industrial past remain permanent fixtures of the landscape. These cases challenge us to rethink the meaning of nature, particularly in urban settings, and our perceptions of parks and open space.

Use the links to the left to navigate through the case studies and explore nature in the post-industrial landscape.
