Urban Ecology Links :: Website Typologies :: Portals + Internet Reference

Please note: The site's name, project/organization location, and my comments about each website are located in the left-hand column. Clicking on each corresponding screenshot in the right-hand column will take you to the actual website in a new browser window so you can investigate the site, project or organization yourself.

ABOUT PLANNING DIRECTORY
(List of Websites)

Great index/directory on the left side of the page, but the categories don't link to anything further! The sites referenced here are primarily organizations and online journals; no actual projects or case studies are included. The list of sites is extremely comprehensive, however there is no way to search within the list for a specific type of organization.

THE ECO GATEWAY
(List of Publications)
This website has an excellent list of categories related to Urban Ecology, and is very broad in the type of articles and essays that it links its users to. Some are published reports from cities, others are ongoing research at universities. This website is very much a model for written case studies.

THE ECOLOGICAL CITIES PROJECT
(List of Organizations)
As I mentioned in both the Research Challenges and Academic/Educational Websites sections of this website, the Ecological Cities project diagram acts as a wonderful way of illustrating "the many components and interdisciplinary nature" of urban ecology. Within this part of their website one can browse through links to other organizations and projects according to topic. Elsewhere on the Ecological Cities website users can search an internal database of urban watershed projects or look up organizations based on geographic location/scope.

PLANETIZEN
(List of Websites, Organizations and Articles)
In addition to Planetizen's highly searchable collection of news articles and essays, the website has a very thorough list of organizations and corresponding web links listed by topic (and then alphabetically). Planetizen has an annual "Top 50" website list and maintains very high standards for what makes the cut, so it's worth it to check back here regularly.
