Many communities have expressed interest in developing Brightfields projects. Some were successful, others were not. This section identifies projects and reports on their progress. Brightfield "Early Adopters" are those who began their projects in 1999-2002. Recent projects include those funded in 2004-present.
Brightfield "Early Adopters"
Chicago Solar Partnership – the Chicago Center for Green Technology developed on brownfield site and hosts a PV manufacturing plant and installed PV array; Chicago Solar Partnership formulated. Over 1,000 kW of solar installed on rooftops across Chicago. In 2005, the PV manufacturing operation was moved out of Chicago and into Spire Corporation's Bedford headquarters. http://www.chicagosolarpartnership.org/index.htm
San Diego – Project feasibility study was completed for a 1 MW PV array to be developed on the Miramar Landfill. The City and the Navy, which owns the site, could not come to terms on a land use agreement or power purchase agreement. The facility was not developed. Cape Charles, VA. The Cape Charles Sustainable Technology Park is an "Eco-Industrial Park" that incorporates a 42 kW PV array on the building's rooftop and includes a PV business within the technology park. Brockton, MA. Project in development, and will include a 425 kW PV array, the largest in New England. See Brockton's Brightfields Project.
White Bluffs/Hanford – installed 38.7 kW in May 2002. This first installment will produce enough electricity to power 16 homes. The system will annually produce 48,089 kilowatt-hours of usable electricity. Atlantic City, NJ “Cityscape Solar-Powered Bed & Breakfast on an Urban Brownfield Site”. This project was never developed. The City's Redevelopment Authority changed its master plan, eliminating the proposed "B&B District".
BP Paulsboro Solar Brightfield. BP constructed this large Brightfield in 2002. The PV array provided about a quarter of the power required to remediate the site. http://www.bpaulsboronj.com/redevelopment/solar.html
Recent Projects :
