I was born and raised in Patna, the capital city of the state of Bihar in eastern India. Patna is situated on the southern bank of the Ganges river. It was known as Pataliputra in ancient times; the city was founded in the 5th century BCE and served as the capital of the Maurya Empire. In the 16th century, it was renamed as Patna.

I received my college education at the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur, in the state of West Bengal, where I earned my B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees. Later, I moved to New York City to pursue graduate studies. I earned a Ph.D. from the City University of New York. After a brief stint at University of Kentucky, Lexington, I joined Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, Massachusetts. I have been at MIT since 1993.
