Overview StarGenetics provides a set of tools for analyzing genetic traits. This software simulates mating experiments between organisms that are genetically different across a range of traits and allows students to analyze the nature of the traits in question.
Introduction
In the field of biology, freely available software packages allow students to explore molecular structure in 3D. However, few present the materials in a format clear enough to use outside the classroom or in self-guided study. In addition, most 3D software packages neglect to portray the four-fold structure of proteins, a critical component to understanding the complexities of change and disease.
Project Description
StarBiogene is a set of visual and analytic software tools for the analysis of genomic gene expression data generated through microarray analysis. This software allows students to compare the expression of multiple genes across a range of biological samples (cell lines, tumors, etc). For example, students can use StarBiogene's visualization engine to compare different patient tumor samples and identify characteristics that are common to one set of tumors based on global patterns of gene expression.
