  ACE Fellows from Massachusetts

"During my Fellowship year, I was often reminded of what physicist Victor
Weisskopf calls the joy of insight: a sense of involvement and awe achieved
when grasping some essential point. A Fellow soon learns the joy of insight
through grasping more fully the complexities of higher education and our
responsibilities to ensure its vital continuity."

Marcellette G. Williams, Deputy Chancellor, University of Massachusetts at Amherst;
1998-99 ACE Fellow; Nominator 1996-97; Mentor 1994-95, 1997-98

Through observation and participation in higher education administration
at the top level, ACE Fellows learn about:

The nature of educational leadership, administrative organization, and
change strategies.

Relationships among different levels of administrative officers.

How decisions are made at various levels.

Relationships between the president (and other senior administrators) and
the governing board, the legislature, business and industry, K-12, and the
broader community.

A strategic issue jointly defined by the nominating institution and the Fellow,
designed to strengthen the nominating institution.
