Student Organization Releases
Science and Technology Voter Guide

Science and technology crucial issues in the presidential race

Cambridge, MA -- 7 September, 2004 -- A national student organization has released a guide to the science and technology policies at stake in the presidential elections. The on-line guide was produced by Student Pugwash USA to highlight the importance of science and technology in the political decisions facing voters this November.

Drawing from government records, campaign statements and media reports, the guide provides backgrounds on the candidates' positions and records on a variety of issues. The first of these includes bioterrorism, stem cell research and renewable energy.

Daniel Collins, a Ph.D. student at MIT and creator of the project, sees it as an opportunity to get voters, particularly students, talking about the issues behind the campaigns, and getting more active in the democratic process. He sees Student Pugwash USA as the ideal group to offer the resource, being a non-partisan group that has raised ethical and political awareness of science and technology now for 25 years.

The guide will be expanded and updated as the elections near. On-line readers are also offered an opportunity to contribute to the guide.

In conjunction with the guide there will also be public events at college campuses across the country during the fall, including a conference at the University of Virginia.
