Honors & awards

Associate Professor of Economics David Autor was awarded the 2004-2005 Undergraduate Economics Association's Teaching Award.

Raphael Dorman and Helen Starbuck Professor of Political Science Suzanne Berger was awarded the Chevalier de l'Ordre National du Mérite by the Government of France.

Castle Krob Career Development Associate Professor of Economics Victor Chernozhukov was awarded an Alfred P. Sloan Research Fellowship for 2005-2007.

Professor of Economics Esther Duflo received the “Prix du Meilleur Jeune Economiste” from the Cercle des Economistes/Journal Le Monde, given yearly to the best French Economist under 40.

Class of 1948 Associate Professor of Theater Arts Thomas DeFrantz's Dancing Revelations: Alvin Ailey's Embodiment of African American Culture, received the 2004 de la Torre Bueno Prize as the year's outstanding English-language publication in dance. Awarded annually, this prize honors the late J.R. de la Torre Bueno, who founded the dance book publishing program at Wesleyan University Press.

Michael M.J. Fischer, Professor of Anthropology and Science and Technology Studies, has been selected as one of 16 Carnegie Scholars for 2005 by the Carnegie Corporation.

Associate Professor of Literature Diana Henderson has received the Everett Moore Baker Memorial Award for excellence in undergraduate teaching.

John Hildebidle, Professor of Literature, has received the Arthur C. Smith Award, for contributions to undergraduate student life and learning.

Elizabeth and James Killian Professor of Economics and Management Paul Joskow was elected to the Board of Overseers of the Boston Symphony Orchestra. Joskow has also been selected by the Association of Yale Alumni (AYA) as one of five Yale University alumni to receive the Yale Medal in 2005. This is the highest award presented by the Association of Yale Alumni and is conferred solely to recognize and honor outstanding individual service to the University.

Alan Lightman, Adjunct Professor of Writing, was awarded an honorary doctorate from Bowdoin College.

Richard M. Locke, Alvin J. Siteman Professor of Entrepreneurship and Political Science, has been awarded the 2005 Faculty Pioneer Academic Achievement Award by the Aspen Institute for Socially Responsible Business for his research and teaching.

Professor of Political Science Stephen Meyer is the recipient of the Francis W. Sargent Conservation Award presented by the Fisheries and Wildlife Board. This award recognizes a significant contribution by an individual or organization to the conservation of natural resources in the Commonwealth.

T.T. and Wei Fong Chao Professor of Asian Civilizations Peter Perdue's book China Marches West: The Qing Conquest of Central Eurasia has been named one of Foreign Affairs' Outstanding Books of 2005.

Arthur J. Conner Professor of History Harriet Ritvo and Ford International Professor of Political Science Richard J. Samuels have been elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.

Professor of Literature and Women's Studies Ruth Perry and Ferrari P. Ward Professor of Linguistics David Pesetsky were appointed Margaret MacVicar Faculty Fellows.

The Article Prize Committee for the ASA Section on the Sociology of Law has selected Professor of Sociology and Anthropology Susan Silbey's co-authored article, Narrating Social Structure: Stories of Resistance to Legal Authority, as co-winner of the prize for best article in the sociology of law for 2003-2005.

Associate Professor of Chinese Studies Emma Teng has been honored as a co-winner of the Edgerton Award. The Edgerton Award is given annually to one or two junior faculty members who have made outstanding contributions to teaching and research at MIT.
