Message from Dean Fitzgerald

Dean Fitzgerald

At SHASS, we believe that everyone can benefit from a deeper understanding of our changing cultural and social context. An important part of that context is the compelling universe of media systems, which are profoundly reshaping the ways we live and learn.

This issue of soundings spotlights GAMBIT, a games-research lab that is a joint venture among MIT's Comparative Media Studies (CMS) program, the Computer Science program, and the Singaporean government. GAMBIT is one of many CMS ventures that enable our students to draw on their SHASS education to tackle compelling, real-world issues—and, we hope, prepare them to help define media and culture in the digital age.
