Shun Kanda - Senior Lecturer, MIT SA&P
A Tokyo native and MIT Department of Architecture faculty member since 1979, Kanda has directed the MIT Japan Design Workshop’s “Continuity & Transformation in Architecture and Community Design” since 1990, working with his MIT architecture students and university counterparts in Japan developing sustainable models for urban and regional communities in various locations in Japan.

 
       
      Hiroto Kobayashi  

Hiroto Kobayashi - Associate Professor, Keio SFC
Mr. Kobayashi is an architect and faculty of Keio SFC University’s School of Media Governance & Policy, co-director with Shun Kanda since 2006 of the Tané Initiative and MIT’s counterpart in the Japan Design Workshop. Kobayashi holds a M.Design and D.Design from Harvard Graduate School of Design. He is Principal of KMDW in Tokyo.

      Akinori Kawanishi  

Akinori Kawanishi - Head Representative, Tane
Mr. Kawanishi is the leader of the local organization that represents the interests of Tané Valley. Born, raised, and still living in the village of Ikeoku, Mr. Kawanishi has been with us since the very beginning, providing invaluable support and insight into Tané's many problems. Without him, we would not have made it this far.

 
       
      Akinori Kawanishi

Toshiaki Nakajima - Representative, Tane
Mr. Nakajima is a member of the local organization that represents the interests of Tané Valley. He works for the Nagahama City Government and is very active in the village of Taniguchi.

  Adele Phillips  

Adele Phillips - Fulbright Graduate Research Fellow
A genuine product of the rural environment which she researches, Adele Phillips grew up on a family-run dairy farm in the Great Plains of the United States. Her work revolves around productive & didactic landscapes, social justice, and environmental sustainability.

       
       
        J. Ira Winder  

J. Ira Winder - Master of City Planning Candidate, MIT SA&P
Ira comes from a large family in rural Appalachia. He believes that small-scale communities like Tane can unify under local codes of social, aesthetic, and economic ideals to achieve a unique landscape not prescribed by typical globalizing forces.
