Blessed are they who expose and develop film,
for they shall be called photographers
Book of Grogo 2:4
We love taking pictures at technique! We'd love it if you took pictures with us, then we'd look a lot less creepy!!!! Because it's so much fun to capture a year in photos, we are always taking pictures part of the time, so if you see someone with a film camera going nuts, they're probably a technique photographer. Anyone can take pictures for technique and we encourage you to join even if you just want to become a photo virtuoso.
The short of it is that we're excited to see what you can do, and we want you to take the best pictures you can! If you'd like advice, there's probably someone here at technique that knows what you're going though. Don't be afraid to ask questions!
What's the yearbook of MIT still doing wasting its time with film??? We love film, it's amazing and it's gorgeous, so we stick with it. We've all got different preferences for films and whatnot, but we'll encourage your curiosity.
What kind of film do we use? Currently we stock the following: Kodak T Max 100, 400 (TMX and TMY respectively), Technical Pan, Fuji Neopan 400 and Neopan 100 Acros, Ilford Delta 100, PanF+ 50, FP4+ 125, and HP5+ 400. We also shoot slide (chrome) film such as Fuji Velvia 50, Astia 100, and sometimes Provia 100.
Yes, we have gone to the dark side, and just like Dylan, have started using digital. Have your own DSLR, and wanna borrow a lens, or submit your pictures? Wanna borrow one of our new Nikon D200 cameras? At Technique, we're all about doing digital right. People that use their cell phone cameras need not apply!
You do NOT need your own equipment to be a technique photographer. We loan out Nikon cameras to eager photographers. If you stop by and hand us a deposit, we'll probably give you a camera that you can use to your heart's content!
On the whole, we shoot 35mm film, but we also have a couple of Holgas sitting around the office for you brooding artists out there. So if you've never had the money to be able to play with 120 film, now is the chance to get started.
Guess what. We have a few digital cameras too.
We really love designers. You don't have to be a photographer to be part of technique. Our designers are responsible for giving style and form to the book, and present both the photographs and text in a way that makes them attractive in print. We use Adobe InDesign to layout the book. Even if you've never used InDesign, or Adobe Illustrator for creating vector graphics, we'll teach you.
During the year, technique will supply you with as much film as you can use. The only catch is that we hold on to the negatives until the book is published and technique maintains first publication rights until that happens. However, technique allows you, the photographer, to maintain all rights to the images that you produce while working for us! A pretty sweet deal.
Even sweeter? Can it be? Yes. At the end of the year, when we're done taking pictures for the book, you get to keep your negatives. That's pretty cool, eh?
