NAIROBI, KENYA

Summary
This project is designed to encourage a maximum degree of self sustainability and discourage displacement upon upgrading. Ninety percent of the people in this squatter settlement are tenants, living in extremely poor conditions and paying rent to landlords who typically own several buildings in various slum neighborhoods. The project reclaimed the government land and compensated the absentee owners for the homes on the land. With this property, the Catholic Archdiocese of Nairobi then upgraded the infrastructure and created the nonprofit Amani Housing Trust to which tenants pay fair rents, the surplus of which goes back into the improvement and maintenance of the neighborhood. Thus, residents at least partially contribute to the development capital for their neighborhood.
