Angola
Innovative latrine design

Summary
This integrated urban upgrading project funded by the World Bank contains a valuable example of knowledge-based development. One of the project’s components introduced a new latrine design to the area and the idea took off even before the project did. These small, inexpensive concrete latrine fixtures with an innovative child-safe opening and sanitary cover started selling very well. Before long, thousands had been sold, improving the sanitation status of the area and producing a profit for the small companies providing them - all for a very inexpensive initial investment: knowledge.
