SECTION :  Gravitational Radiation Intermediate Zone

SUBJECT: curly E dot R

DESCRIPTION: A Dynamic Line Integral Convolution of the vector field curly E dot R with no background quadrupole, with the scale chosen so as to illuminate the features of the intermediate zone. The wavelength cT is indicated in the figure. The underlying velocity field for the DLIC is taken to be zero, so that the random pattern does not evolve, that is it is the same for each frame. This causes a lot of "flickering" in the DLIC because there is clearly a pattern propagation in the vector field displayed here that the underling velocity field of the DLIC does not match (because it is taken to be zero). At great distances the pattern in the velocity field is propagating outward at the speed of light, but we do not know how to describe the pattern speed everywhere.

Note the flickering in this movie, where we do not know the velocity of the pattern propagation, as compared to the electricmagnetic quadrupole case, which is topologically the same field, but where we know the velocity of the pattern propagation.

Click on the figure to download and play the movie. This is an .avi format movie about 15 Meg in size (the spatial complexity makes the file size larger),
