How does the admissions committee
decide who to accept into the program?
The admissions committee looks at an applicant as a whole
package, including GRE score and TOEFL (if necessary), grades,
statement of purpose, writing sample, and recommendations.
We don't have any minimum requirements for GPA or the GRE.
The committee looks closely at the statement of purpose
to ensure a match between the student and the program; and
at the writing sample for a piece of good analytical writing.
What kinds of students are accepted
to CMS?
Comparative Media Studies hopes to attract mature students,
those with some life and work experience who wish to return
to school to further their education, or take it in a new
direction. The admissions committee is not looking for a
specific background or course of study in a student. They
are looking for a student whose interests will be well served
by the program, and vice versa.
I have had substantial work
experience in advertising and journalism, I feel that my
academic institution and my transcript may not adequately
reflect my abilities. Would you consider an application
that is based on work experience?
Work experience is certainly one of many aspects that our
admissions committee considers when making decisions.
How many students are admitted
to the program each year?
We expect to accept approximately 10 students a year for
the next several years.
Are admissions rolling or annual?
Admission decisions are made during the spring semester,
mid-February. Since there are only a few slots available,
we will also have a short waiting list. Wait-listed students
will be informed of their status.
Is an interview necessary?
Interviews are not necessary, but we encourage perspective
students to visit the program and MIT.
