[Children's book: Mr. Suhuy's Amazing Variable Pattern]
Jean goes looking for a trump of Flora. Jean in the Paths of the Dead goes looking for Dworkin. Dworkin is trying to sleep with Barlan, in order to find out what Verra sees in her.
Jean asks Dworkin if he has a minute, and is handed 360 little pebbles. Jean takes the pebbles and asks Dworkin if he has seen his mom. Dworkin is horrified, exclaims that he'll never be able to get any little cupcakes again, and starts looking for a trump deck. He fails to find one, pulls a dagger, and starts drawing, leaving silvery lines behind. The trump is of his deck.
Jean flips through the deck. There are all sorts of lists there. He displays images for the Dancers' Guild. Jean concentrates on Flora's trump, and doesn't get anything. He hands it back to Dworkin, who concentrates on it, gets very disturbed, and then hands it back to Jean. "Your trump isn't working." "Why?" "What do you think I am? A trump artist?" "Yes."
Dworkin's insanity quotient is very high today.
Dworkin contemplates trumping the trump, does so, and succeeds.
Dworkin is told that Celeste is dead, and asked who did it. Jean contemplates thinking hard and suiciding, but tries lying first.
Jean asks Ilk about trumping. Ilk points out that Pattern-trumps are not his forte, and advises that he ask Norton.
There is a delegation outside Norton's house that doesn't want to let Jean in. They have problems with Hendrake's (nonexistant) policies. Something that seems to be Snarsht is still curled up around one of the towers. Jean has one of him inside the house ask.
Norton trumps Flora and disappears.
Jean fishes the trump back to Dworkin, and asks for a trump of Norton. They discuss Norton's disappearance.
Dworkin is horrified that they lost another King (well, Prince Consort) of Amber. Dworkin calls for his brother.
Suhuy is aware that there is a blinking light in his ways, warning him that Dworkin is looking for him. He warns an Ilk and battens down the hatches, then heads a few shadows such that Dworkin ...
Cailin has left the Fringe in advance of those shooting at him. He finds cover at the base of a hill and starts tossing stuff at them. Accellerated pebbles bounce of a bluish wall in front of them.
A bird stops by to chat, stoops at the shield, bounces, then comes back with friends and they deficate on the shield.
Cailin conjures exploding corn-dogs inside the shield. The attackers leave through the fringe gate. a recon droid comes through, looks around, returns. Cailin tells bird to say unwanted intruders.
Erika shows up, starts setting thiings up. A few weeks later, Cailin is contacted and asked if he would like to talk to some strangers who showed up. They turn out to be a military group from a "manifest destiny" culture on Flora's shadow earth. They are staked out near the Fringe gate as a warning to any others that might follow.
Cailin heads out to Chaos to find out what was going on with his grandmother. Natasha, the pregnant mother of his child-to-be comes with him.
Random is glad to meet his future great-grandson, and asks about marriage. Cailin invites them to join his House. Random asks if Cailin is a shapeshifter. "Kind of." "Never mind."
Cailin sends a message to Princess Chandra.
Ecto-Ilk notices a mechanical bird outside the Assassins' Guild that is identical to three others on stakes out front and sends a note in to a one of the assassins that are staying just far enough back in order to not disturb Shiryu, who asked for silence.
In a little bit, someone comes out, throws a dart through it which disables it entirely, grabs the bird, and carries it back inside.
There is a note from Rudy in Neville's drop box. "Contact has been made; daughter has been returned to mother." He gets a trump call about half of a day after the note. The reuniting went well, and he said that she had misplaced her daughter and that he and his roommate were glad to reunite them.
Rudy pulls Neville into a decent apartment. Dara is coming over for dinner in a few hours.
