Neville, Jean, and Osric experiment with shielding and trump fish in preparation for their plans to get Osric and a strike force into Rebma's Pattern room. When Neville puts up a box around the sandstone Jean to protect him from the influence of the Pattern, that Jean's sensory inputs become strange. The scheme is determined to be feasible and Neville leaves the council chambers to begin his approach to the Pattern in Rebma.
A boba-Jean wakes Dworkin and tells him that the nasty white person is walking the Pattern in Rebma. When Dworkin it told that she is his daughter by Clarissa, the conversation takes a turn for the strange.
Dworkin - "Where is the wench?"
Jean - "The wench?"
Dworkin - "The wench who whelped her."
Jean - "She might not be any more."
Dworkin - "So her kid is all I have left of her?"
Jean - "No! You have Celeste!"
Dworkin - "But she's not Patternish."
Jean - "She could be."
Dworkin - "Very well, then."
Jean asks Dworkin about Rebma again, and Dworkin volunteers to go take a bath, grabs the boba-Jean, and walks through the wall of the council chambers. Andron winces.
Ilk as Suhuy attempts to reach out to the Serpent for advice on what to do about the expanding anti-Logrus areas in shadow. One moment he is reaching out for the Serpent, and the next he finds himself sitting in the entry room to the Logrus. There is a Presence, but nothing noticeable from a sensory standpoint. Ilk bows. As he rises from the bow, he finds himself in a different state.
Ilk has a feeling of waiting for him to speak, so he does so. Ilk tells the Serpent about the probably intelligently and maliciously directed expanding anti-Logrus areas and the possibility of a connection with the soul-eating grass walking the Logrus. The Serpent replies that the Logrus itself is almost certainly not harmed, and that normally investigating matters of this nature would be Suhuy's responsibility, but that, given the circumstances, he would do so himself.
[Ilk's not the Logrus Master - he's the Logrus Babysitter!]
Ilk then brings up the matter of Norton and his head people as scales on the Serpent's back, asks for them back, and upon request, explains how he knows of such matters. The Serpent agrees to see to it.
Ilk as Suhuy finds himself outside the entrance chamber to the Logrus. He notices that the doorway is more complex than Ilkandacian had noticed - there are many possible paths through the door. Ilk takes the familiar path, and looks at the Logrus. It is more chaotic than usual, possibly due to the Serpent stomping about looking for grass. Ilk leaves the room again to place a "No Logrus Walking Allowed" sign on the outside of the door.
When he steps through the door, he finds the Unicorn standing in front of him. Ilk as Suhuy bows to the Unicorn as to an associate of his master, and receives a nod in return. The unicorn strikes a hoof onto the ground, a drop of blood wells out, and the unicorn turns and walks off. Ilk notices that he is tendri'd out, but not in the usual fashion. The blood contains the signatures of Norton, Ilkandacian, Mandor, and the screaming guy. The Logrus doesn't want to touch it, and placing a power pull next to it fails to change anything. Ilk as Suhuy Logrus-pulls in Ilk as Savior of Chaos, to attempt a more risky maneuver. Ilk as Savior of Chaos tries to contact the Ilk in Norton, while Ilk as Suhuy monitors the procedure. Ilk in Norton seems tired or distracted, but Ilk continues trying to make contact.
Norton feels a disturbance in his state of complete peace, as if someone was scraping fingernails on a blackboard a few rooms over. Norton tries to ignore it, but the disturbance continues. Ilk shouts at Ilk more loudly, and the sound seems to move closer to Norton. Norton finally tries to vibrate to damp the sound and unfolds from a drop of blood into a full Norton.
Norton greets Ilk and Suhuy, and then Norton and Ilk chat about recent events and desired actions. Norton asks Ilk if it is known yet whether Clarissa was subverted by the enemy, attacked by the enemy, or was actively a traitor.
Ilk as Suhuy wonders if he could contact Shiryu, and acquires contact, much to his great surprise. He asks and is told that Shiryu is recovering from unmaking Clarissa - she was a traitor. Suhuy wishes Shiryu well, and mentions the current plan of attack. Shiryu replies, "Perhaps I will see you there."
Suhuy tells Norton that Clarissa was a traitor.
Ilk speculates on whether Clarissa was in fact just a figure-head or focal point for a power that was being fought over by many factions, and not properly a person in the normal sense.
Dworkin has reached the Primal Pattern, dragging a boba-Jean along behind him. He exclaims, "Oops - wrong Pattern", and steps sideways, and Jean is now looking at the Rebman Pattern from inside the wall Norton's blucited scout sees a section of the wall to the Pattern room turn transparent, and can see Dworkin holding a boba-Jean in a balloon.
Jean sees Gwen show up on the Pattern, take another two steps, then fade out again, and points her out to Dworkin as the bad guy. Dworkin raves about his descendents and desires the return of Ferro. Jean juggles throwing fish.
Both Cailins exit the council chambers, and one of them scans for Fringe gates.
Neville appears in the center of Rebma's Pattern. There is no sign of Gwen currently. Dworkin turns to Jean and says, "That's not my daughter!"
Neville lets the sandstone Jean out of the box. Jean can now tell that he is in the center of the Pattern. Osric turns into something small and climbs into the Trump fish, which appears in the center of the Pattern next to Jean. Osric climbs out of the fish and creates a baseball bat made out of Fringe power.
Ilk and Norton head out to ask Faythe if she knows of a way to keep Gwen from drawing power from the Darkoven matrix crystals.
Cailin asks Jenoir how to prevent bad feedback from going along his rings, and receives a spell to do so. He examines the spell, and determines how to duplicate it.
Gwen appears near the second veil on the Pattern in Rebma. Jean pipes up, "That's her." Osric whacks Gwen across the kneecaps with the bat. She vibrates, but fails to stop, fall, or shatter.
Dworkin is confused. "That's who?"
"The bad person."
"So why is that one hitting her?"
"Because she's bad."
Dworkin sticks his head through the wall, and says, "Hit her again, hit her again!"
Osric hits Gwen again, with similar results.
Osric tries to encase Gwen in a shield and succeeds in trapping her in a dome, but it hurts where the dome touches the Pattern. Gwen tries to leave, fails, and looks uncomfortable. Osric tries to cut her head off with his shield. She starts casting heavy magic to defend herself from that.
Norton, en-route to his House with Ilk and watching the scene through his blucited scout, asks Jean for a lift to the center of that Pattern. Jean does so, and Norton appears in the shield with Osric and the Jean statue. Neville is still in a separate shield.
["I fish Norton to the center of the Rebma Pattern."]
Norton asks Osric if he can airlock a shield through another shield, and receives a response to the affirmative. Norton builds a fish, which Osric sends over and passes into Gwen's shield.
Gwen ignores the fish until it starts eating the magic that is keeping Osric from choking her. She panics, and uses more magic against the fish. The fish eats that magic and keeps going.
Jean exclaims to Dworkin, "That's why I use fish as weapons!"
Gwen panics again and the fish stops. Osric can tell that it has been encased in blucite.
Norton creates a ball of his fire and Osric passes that over to Gwen as well. The fire is much less successful, and fails to contact her body.
Ilk as Suhuy asks Jean if he could pass the Logrus blade through to Osric. Jean fishes the Logrus blade over to Osric. When the Logrus weapon arrives, Norton's sanity level drops cataclysmically and he thinks that he could walk on that. Norton slices his palm, bleeds out a new him, and hands it the Logrus blade. The new Norton starts walking straight towards Gwen, crossing the lines of the Pattern.
Norton and Osric send over a bubble filled with shapeshifter virus that fails to impress Gwen.
Osric and Jean can perceive a dark viscous fluid boiling away at the interface of Norton's feet and the Pattern.
[Norton was just bled out of the Serpent!]
[This Norton has been bled out of both Celeste and the Serpent!]
"He can't be doing that! That's my Pattern!" Dworkin tears his way out of the wall, is hit by a crossbow bolt, becomes distracted, and starts shredding the defense emplacements around the room.
The Norton that is walking is becoming more Norton and the one in the center of the Pattern less Norton. The Ilk and Mandor and screaming guy are in the one that is walking. The hand that is holding the blade is becoming more and more Ilk, as the blade changes Norton into something that it finds more comfortable.
The observers notice that the thing walking towards Gwen is looking more and more like Ilkandacian, and that the thing in the center still looks like Norton.
When Jean tells the people in the council chambers that their enemy is under attack in Rebma, Jenoir offers to project from Jean's eyes what he is seeing. She does so. They see Ilkandacian advancing on Gwen across the Pattern, carrying Suhuy's Logrus blade. Dworkin is visibly assisting by breaking crossbows. Norton and Osric are in one bubble in the center of the Pattern, and Neville is in another.
The Amberites present in the council chambers are horrified. House Chanicut is cheering Osric.
The walking one reaches Gwen and Osric allows him through the shield. Norton exudes the antidote for the shifters virus, which was bothering him far more than it was Gwen. Gwen draws a small white dagger with which to defend herself from the Logrus blade, and Norton flames her. The flames lick directly over her body.
Neville pulls out a small dagger that is so black that it is pink and says, "Osric - hit her with this!" The dagger is encased in its own shield and heads towards Gwen. Norton, recognizing the blade, decides not to disturb it.
Norton decides that since Clarissa exiled Llewella and Clarissa was a traitor, Llewella might not be a traitor. Ilk in Norton agrees to try to transmit the information to others, in the case that Norton fails to survive this encounter.
The baby Morganti sticks into Gwen. The dagger distracts her enough that she is no longer parrying against Norton, and Norton sticks her with Suhuy's Logrus blade. Suddenly the resistance to Osric's skull crushing goes away. The blucited fish falls to the ground, bursts into flames, and becomes a small grease spot on the Pattern.
Dworkin looks up, says, "Not on my Pattern!" and all of the participants find themselves elsewhere when the first drops of Gwen's blood are a few inches away from striking the Pattern.
Norton's shield has shattered. Norton is lying on his back with a weight on the end of his sword. Norton finds that he is on his back because he fell hard. The only sensory input that he has is touch. He slices and dices.
The Jean in the wall stayed in the wall. Fortunately, the suit has water, Frogdelorian nutrient paste, and carbon filtering.
The shell around Neville shatters and Neville disappears. Neville finds that he was moved back one step to the place where he was before he came here.
The sandstone Jean and Osric are lying on their backs on a ring station somewhere.
The Jean in the wall and everyone in the council chambers sees a blink, everyone vanish, and Dworkin staggers slightly and falls.
Norton tries to grow more sensory organs. The only other thing there is a slight crystalline hum. Ilk tells him that he probably is in the Morganti. Norton knows that he isn't on the god channel.
Jean in the wall tries to bud into Dworkin, and succeeds. He can tell that Dworkin is alive and that he is definitely inside someplace in Dworkin's head, because even Chaos isn't this bad. Jean can see Wixer arguing with Wixer.
A very worn looking Corwin and Marial walk into the council chambers.
Neville re-appears in the center of the Pattern. He looks around, but
his knife is not there. Neville Pattern-teleports over to
Dworkin. Dworkin doesn't seem to be well. There is a trickle of blood
flowing from the corner of his mouth. He is lying there and looks like
an old, tired, injured man.
Neville chats with Jean about bringing Dworkin to a place where he can
heal. Jean asks Ilk as Suhuy for advice, and Suhuy suggests Dragaera.
Morrolan is suggested and asked for input. Cailin asks Jenoir to open a
magical gate to the Rebman Pattern room, and she does so. Neville takes
Dworkin through the gate to Thelbane, and notices that Dworkin feels
unusually light. Morrolan gives Jenoir an image of "Aunty Verra's
place" with some unsolicited help from Andron, and Dworkin is
transported to the Paths of the Dead.
When Osric wakes up he tries to leave, and discovers that this ring
station is locked - he's in the center of the dead zone, but there is no
Gwen influence here. As he gets out from the center, unlocking gates and
then re-locking them behind him, he begins to find the remains of
buildings and scattered dust, as if someone had just drained all of the
power from them. Once he has left the center two or three gates behind,
his Gwen detector starts registering a single presence again. Osric
leaves into shadow. The place into which he emerges looks normal - no
current fighting, but many corpses. He gates to another gate, then comes
back in on his side of the Fringe and goes to his control center. Osric
discovers a small Jean saucer trying to be inconspicuous in his control
center with the help of the Mellor and pockets it.
"Jean, you know I didn't want you in here."
"Duh - that's why I was hiding."
Osric examines the region of Gwen influence - it's down to a ring now.
He does some damage control, exits through an uncontaminated ring
station, then gates to Chaos. Cailin looks through the gate and reads
off the coordinates of the ring station.
Jean approaches a Gwen statue and notices that it is still there and
being worshiped. He considers killing the worshipers, but fails to do
so.
Norton tries burning the thing that is around him, and it hurts. Norton
tries poking the sword through the thing it was slashing. For a brief
moment he sees through the hole as if he was seeing through someone's
eyes in a grey place, then it sealed up again.
Corwin is helped to his throne, wearily sits down, and then lets out a
long sigh. Marial, who had collapsed near the door, is propped up on her
chair by Jean.
Ilk and Norton in Norton's head discuss ways of escape.
