I was glad to have Karen off of me, to be able to settle myself and get Cheryl out of my head, but more importantly, I needed to talk to Paul. I grabbed him on the dancefloor and we went outside of the ballroom. We sat down on the carpet near the staircase and I asked him what was going on.

He was depressed because Wendy had been making eyes at David, her old boyfriend, throughout the dance. He was feeling dissed by her, and then, without warning, she ran off to the bathroom, stranded.

See, Wendy would always come into work over the weekends with news about David. She'd say "Oh, David and I had the most wonderful time last weekend!" or "Oh, you men are scum! David was so creepy!" or "I'm thinking of getting back together with David!" in three-week cycles. Paul and Wendy agreed to go to the prom when she was in one of her troughs, and now she was climbing again.

I tried to cheer him up and explain what her deal was, but I think I ended up rambling about Karen and Cheryl and everything else. He seemed a bit happier, probably because he could take his mind off of his own problems while I babbled.
