Though dealing with a theme specific to the Taiwanese family culture, the main issues of Ang Lee's Eat Drink Man Woman are universal. The comedy arise through non-communication or miscommunication across generations. The Chu family's dilemma is common among many contemporary families. Love goes unspoken, and when it is finally expressed, misunderstandings ensue. Perhaps preparing and having a meal together is the best solution, as Old Chu suggests.
