With two freshman and another newcomer to
the team starting their first college game, MIT got off to
a slow start, allowing Emerson to jump out to an early lead.
Sparked by a dunk by sophomore Kyle
Doherty and aggressive man-to-man defense, the Engineers
slowly worked their way back into the game before taking the
lead. The game remained close as MIT was quickly in the foul
penalty and Emerson capitalized on just about all of their
free throws. MIT sophomore Andrew Tsai
came off the bench with seven points and after another steal
from the relentless MIT defense, freshman point guard Danny
Kanamori hit his second consecutive three-pointer as the
Engineers opened up a nine-point lead going into halftime.
MIT came out very sluggish allowing Emerson
to storm back into the game and take the lead. Instead of
calling a timeout, Coach Anderson relied on his players to
retake control of the game. Doherty and freshman Mike
Huhs dominated the offensive boards with several key tip-ins
that gave the lead back to the Engineers. After another three-pointer
by freshman Adam Gibbons, the Engineers
never trailed again. Emerson kept trying to come back after
some careless MIT turnovers, but a layup by junior captain,
Alex Phillips and another by Kanamori
with under three minutes remaining sealed the game. The Engineers
made enough free throws down the stretch to preserve the win.
