Although it was the first home game, MIT
got off to a very slow start and was held scoreless for the
first four minutes of the game. Reserve junior, Stuart
Laval, got the Engineers on track with a tip-in off his
own miss. However, MIT still trailed by double digits. Despite
not playing well, the Engineers slowly crept back into the
game with strong defense led by freshman Danny
Kanamori. The Engineers shot terribly from the outside
though going 0-9 from three-point range in the first half,
but managed to go into halftime with a slim lead with good
half-court execution for easy back-door layups.
MIT came out much better in the second half
and built a 15 point lead. Kanamori
had a steal and a layup and sophomore Andrew
Tsai hit a three-pointer during that stretch. However,
Suffolk battled back and eventually took a one-point lead.
After a brief timeout, the Engineers responded. Kanamori
had a nice dish to sophomore Kyle Doherty
for an easy layup and freshman Adam
Gibbons hit two big three-pointers to give the Engineers
the lead for good. Gibbons continued
to be the main scorer for the Engineers with several strong
drives and layups. But, Suffolk never quit and only trailed
by two. With three minutes remaining off a dish from Tsai,
Kanamori nailed a three and was
fouled on the play to give the Engineers a cushion. Gibbons
made two clutch free throws down the stretch to preserve the
victory. Junior Boris Paskalev
and Doherty had seven rebounds for
the Engineers.
