Research summary:
The goal of my project is to garner a better understanding of cancer progression by bringing together well-characterized cellular model systems with novel microfluidic platforms developed in our laboratory. Focusing on the processes of intravasation and extravasation, I will directly visualize the interaction of individual cancer cells with microvascular endothelial cells at unmatched spatial and temporal resolution. This approach will be adapted to determine, for the first time, the molecular basis of force generation within cancer cells crossing the endothelium, the fate of extravasated cells in the extravascular space, and the biophysical adaptations that enhance metastatic ability.
