soil

The formation of soil is dynamic process that is influenced by climate, vegetation, and topography. Soil is formed as a result of the weathering of the underlying bedrock. The general soil type in this area is silty loam.

Characteristics of silty loam include:

1. fair permeability

2. medium nutrient capacity

3. medium to high compactibility

4. high runoff potential.

These factors will become important, particularly viewed in an urban context. The soil in an urban environment is altered by urbanization. The soil is thus termed "urban" soil. It is the characteristics of urban soil, in concert with the qualities of the natural soil , which will have a significant impact on topography, hydrology, vegetation, and micro-climates. Site-specific knowledge of soil will become important as you begin the design process.
