Life Support SystemsThe life support system (LSS) consists of atmosphere revitalization, elimination of trace pollutants, and waste recycling. Atmosphere RevitalizationThe average person will need 0.98 kg of O2 per day. Thus, in order to sustain a 24 person crew, the amount of O2 used each day shall be 16500 L at 1 atm. Enough O2 shall be stored for one month in pressurized tanks. In addition, nitrogen shall also be stored and distributed as needed to maintain an atmospheric composition like that at 1 atm on the surface. The CO2 produced by 24 people per day will be 13200 L. The LSS shall incorporate LiHO scrubbers to remove the CO2. This is a two step which requires water vapor. The LiHO canisters will be replaced as often as their CO2 concentration reaches limiting levels. At all times extra canisters shall be stored and they shall be re-supplied through the periodic transportation runs. Elimination of Trace ContaminantsLSS will monitor and remove the trace contaminants and pollutants in the atmosphere. This includes filtering the habitat air for particulates and microorganisms and removing volatile organic trace gasses. Monitoring Habitat AirThe system shall monitor the temperature, humidity levels, pressure, and contaminants. Waste Removal and RecyclingThe solid waste (feces, trash, paper, plastic, etc.) shall be collected and sent to the surface with the transport in their biweekly visits. The liquid waste (urine, grey waters, food preparation waters, etc.) shall be recycled. 1000 L of water minimum shall be stored in the system with a system maximum of 1500 L. The water shall be replenished in the bi-weekly re-supplying trips. All recycled water shall undergo ultraviolet radiation exposure for disinfection from microbiological organisms. The water used for drinking and cooking shall go through additional filtration to eliminate the undesirable odors and colors. |
