Terrestrial ecosystem

Project Overview

Welcome! This site is design to record (and share!) the information uncovered during research for Mission 2008. Initially, content will focus on the terrestrial ecology of Isabela and Fernandina islands. Beginning November 13th, information will also be posted that looks at the green development of these islands and the political atmosphere (both on the islands and in the Galapagos). If you have layout suggestions, feel free to e-mail me. If there is something about the ecology of Isabela or Fernandina that interests you, please let me know and I will try to research the aspects of the islands you find useful. A short summary of changes made to the site will be included below:

Most new information can be found on the tor2 site through the links for trip or elibrary to the right. Information

My own interests focus around a design in response to the question of how best to preserve the Galápagos that integrates the values, needs, and mindsets of those who are residents of the Galapagos today, those in power in the government, and the scientist / conservationists working in the region, in an attempt to give the project a shot at long term success. Along these lines, I was in Quito, Ecuador Nov. 4th through 10th. Information will be posted to the trip link as I have a chance (with any luck, the day I get it). I will also be integrating this information into the sections on green village design and ecology. About a week ago I experienced a slight crisis of purpose where I felt that the reality of the situation was overriding the vision we are working towards. Being here, and thus immersed in the question, has done some very significant good and much stabilized the faith I have in what we are working towards, as well as my trust in those who have already dedicated so much of their lives to these islands.

I live at MIT's East Campus in Walcott 412, and can be reached at ajaffe@mit.edu, or by phone at (609) 273-5914 (cell).
