To determine the shape and size of the jellybean hold, a model was first made using blue foam. We found that a jellybean hold that is 4.5" wide and 3" tall gives a strong, comfortable grip, and used those dimensions in the CAD model.
In order to give the room more variety and increase difficulty, we chose to introduce different types of jellybean holds. The jellybean shape and size of each of the holds is the same to maintain a constant theme, but the way they sit on the wall is different. One hold has a gap between the jelly bean and the wall, while the second hold sits flush with the wall.
From these two different models we can achieve three different ways to grip the jellybean holds based on their type and orientation. The jellybean hold with the gap between the wall allows users to secure their fingers behind the jellybean and get a good grip. In rock climbing terms this is known as a"Jug Hold". The second jellybean hold that sits flush with the wall requires users to grab the hold from the top, known as a "Crimp Hold". Finally, mounting the flush jellybean hold at a 90 degree angle results in the third type, "Pinch Hold", in which users squeeze the hold with their thumb and fingers places on opposite sides.

There are two methods used to mount holds to rock walls: bolt on and screw on. Bolt on holds are secured to the wall with a single 3/8" bolt, which is screwed into a t-nut that is fixed on the other side of the wall. Screw on holds use two 3/8" screws that are simply drilled into the wall. Since the bolt on holds require more preparation for assembly, we decided to use the screw on method for our jellybean holds.
