Human Use Analysis: Microwaves

Experience

Let's walk through the set-up and layout of a sample microwave.

Set-Up

Pictured here is an Oster microwave, located in the communal kitchen.

Button Breakdown

There are 29 buttons on the front of the microwave, 9 of which are "pre-programmed settings." In addition, the user can control the power, set a timer, cook, or defrost. The latter two settings can be further controlled by weight. Finally, there is a number pad to set a cooking time or control the clock, a stop/reset button, an 'Express' button, and one that starts cooking or adds a minute.

In my experience, I have only used the number pad, the stop/reset button, and the start button. After a few minutes of investigation, I was unable to determine the purpose of the 'Cook' or 'Express' buttons.
