Boston T Ticket Machine: The User Experience

The intended purpose of this device is to serve as an automated method for purchase different type of tickets and rail passes for the Boston T. The machine is often designed to accept cash and credit/debit cards for ticket purchases, however certain machines will only accept cards.

Upon first approaching one of the machines intended for cash or card it is evident that there are settings to allow use in both Spanish and Chinese, as well as having an audio navigation option and a variety of tactile interfaces for the visually impaired.

A standard user of the machine looking to purchase a ticket, would initially begin by touching the home screen. This prompt is displayed in both English and Spanish, but no other languages. This would then lead to a home page with four purchasing options. A customer can now, purchase a standard ticket of a given amount, a one or two-way quick ticket, or touch their Charlie Card to the scanner.

In this case we will assume customer would like to purchase an Adult ticket. The customer will then be asked how much they would like to load onto the card, followed by their preferred method of payment. The preselected amounts can also be changed by selecting ‘Other Amount’. Once the customer has paid, a paper ticket will be printed from below.

A frequent user with a Charlie card has a similar experience. Upon tapping their card on the scanner they are presented with a menu with options to Add Value to their Card, buy a linked pass, a monthly pass, or view card/ticket info. A person looking to take the train would then add value to their card through the same method as before.
